Reviews consistently give it the best rating among gimbals for phones and action cameras. It has the most settings and features and will also work with almost all phones as well.

To make this gimbal compatible with your GoPro, you’ll need to pick up a mounting plate adapter or you can order the Smooth 4 with GoPro adapter and counterweight included.

Okay, with that taken care of, let’s get back to the post.

Best gimbal for GoPro

What is a gimbal?

Technically, a gimbal is any pivoted support that rotates an object on an axis. But when YouTubers and videographers talk about gimbals, they are talking about video gimbals with 3-axis rotation that allow the camera to be mechanically stabilized.

Gimbals use motorized stabilization systems to help reduce (even eliminate) camera vibration and shake. Using algorithms and gyroscopes, motorized gimbals can differentiate between unwanted shake and deliberate movements (like tracking and pans).

A decent GoPro gimbal will improve your video quality, reduce edit time, and create a more watchable (shareable) video.

4 Reasons to Use a Gimbal for GoPro

Not certain if you will benefit from a GoPro gimbal? Here are some reasons to consider one for you camera:

  1. Buttery smooth footage: There is no denying the difference a quality gimbal makes in video footage. It can make the difference between an unwatchable clip and professional looking footage. It really is that significant.
  2. Reduce editing time: Of course, when your footage is that much better, you’ll spend less time in editing software. And less of your adventure will fall on the editing room floor.
  3. Preset controls: Many gimbals have presets for time-lapse, panoramas, and subject tracking. This raises the bar. A lot. This will take your video quality up 10 notches.
  4. Built in handle, battery, tripod Foot: Many gimbals have built in features that eliminate the need for additional GoPro accessories. They include camera mount, selfie stick, battery pack, and tripod.

The end result is much more professional looking videos. And who doesn’t want that?

8 Factors to Choose the Best GoPro Gimbal

Here are the factors to consider as you choose the best GoPro gimbal for your adventures.

  1. Stabilization: How many axis does the gimbal use? Most will have 3, but some only have one. How fluid are the motors? Are they silent (brushless)?
  2. Weight: The larger the battery, the heavier the unit. Also, some gimbals are mostly plastic while others have more metal.
  3. Durability: Choosing between metal or plastic construction will depend on the type of activities you’re planning. And how important weight is for your activities. Generally speaking, the heavier the gimbal, the more durable it is.
  4. Size: Some come with a longer handle, others with a more powerful (but significantly larger) gimbal head.
  5. Battery Life: The majority of gimbals come with a built-in battery (power bank) that can direct connect to your camera. This can extend battery life dramatically – up to 3 times longer than a standard GoPro battery.
  6. Setup time: How complicated is the install process? Consider both the physical mounting to the gimbal, and then syncing to any related software controls.
  7. Water Resistance: While none of these GoPro gimbals are waterproof, some are water resistant. This allows you to use them in light rain but definitely not underwater or even in a heavy downpour.
  8. Compatible with other devices: Some of these gimbals are also compatible with phones, other action cameras, and point and shoot cameras.

4 Tips for Shooting with a GoPro Gimbal

  1. Watch vertical movement: A typical gimbal has 3 axises: pan, tilt, and roll. That means that gimbals don’t control vertical movement. If you forget this, you’ll end up with a bobbing video – the viewer will feel like they are floating in a wavy sea. This is of most concern when the videographer walks in an exaggerated way or is jumping a lot.
  2. Plan your shots ahead: While gimbals are lightweight, you’ll find that they can get clumsy and heavy when you have to lug it around. And gimbals aren’t needed for everything. Sometimes it’s best to leave it in your pack or even at home, depending on what you’re shooting.
  3. Be balanced: If you’re using the Karma gimbal, you don’t need to worry – it’s made for your GoPro camera. But if you’re using another piece of gear, make sure that the camera is well balanced in the mount. If the weight is offset, you’ll drain the battery. Or even overwork the motor.
  4. Invert the gimbal: Don’t forget that you can rotate the gimbal to get a better angle or shot. Many users tend to keep it vertical and waist height. And while this is okay for some settings, try some other angles and you’ll get much better results.
