Photography Resources

Camera Gear | Bookstore

We wanted to create a resource list of the tools and books we use. The following products are items that we own and use. This will be continually updated as we try and use new items.

One more thing: As you might have guessed, this page contains affiliate links. That means when you click on the link and make a purchase we may receive a commission. Don’t worry: You won’t pay more. In fact, you’ll probably pay less with all the vendors in one place. Thanks for using our links – affiliate earnings are how we run the site.

Here's what we had in our gear bag when we started this blog (August 2015).

Photography Tools and Apps

adobe photoshop lightroom ccAdobe Photoshop + Lightroom: While there are many free (and cheap) options, we recommend and use Adobe Photoshop. Just recently we have begun to experiment with Lightroom and we  are pleasantly surprised by the results. You can get both for just $9.99/mo as part of the Creative Cloud Photography plan.

101 lightroom presets101 Lightroom Presets Pack: The problem with Lightroom is all the settings. While they can do anything – they can also do anything. It can be pretty hard to know how to get “that look”.

Using presets allows you to experiment with automatic editing of your images. These 101 presets are broken into seven categories:

  1. Plush Portraits
  2. Lively Landscapes
  3. Street Grit & Grunge
  4. Bangin’ Black & White
  5. Sleek Sepia
  6. Classic Vintage
  7. Quick Adjustments

SugarSync: We manage our photography library with the SugarSync application. The tool both backups our images to their server and sync the library across our two computers. It is fast and seamless. By using SugarSync, we both have access to each others images.

How We Power

We run our site on WordPress with Thesis Framework and Effectus skin (both by DIYThemes). We host our site at LiquidWeb.

We backup with BlogVault. It keeps our content safe and easy to restore in case of a crash or hack. It also helps in moving the site to new hosting.

Camera Gear

This is a pretty big category. To help make some sense of all the options, we've organized it by brand.
